FallKniven A1 Review: this is a legendary in European military, and I suppose it will be in the US Military eventually too. This knife was used by some US Marines in Iraq & Afghanistan. They said it was bulletproof through extremely hard use in all weather & conditions.
I got this knife in an Autumn day last year. This is one deadly-serious knife I ever seen. Yes! I’m talking about a Crazy-sharp, heavy - duty & extremely well - balanced survival/ fighting knife. On a 5-star scale, this is easily a 10-star knife.
Fallkniven is certainly a premium - grade brand of cutlery. I do also own Kabar knives,Ontario knives, ESEE knives among many other brands. Every knife has its own function. At the mid - range market of field knives, Ka-Bar, ESEE and Ontario are my best choice, while premium field knives such as Fallkniven, is for professionals who depend on their cutlery as their tools of the trade. I have heard that soldiers really like their Fallkniven knives for hard - use in the battlefield. The knife was told that usually self-equipped by the U.S. Military, or in some form for the U.S. Government. Civilians have not usually heard of this brand.
The Fallkniven company is a Swedish based institution. It has been producing knifes and knife related gears as their consistent product lines since 1984. The company started importing knives and their own production started within 1987. It has been one of the most celebrated brands in the military and outdoor knives criteria. They have been one of the premier suppliers of knife and gear to the Swedish military for decades. They have also been one of the chief survival gear products for the Pilots enlisting in Swedish Air force since 1995. You automatically start expecting a certain level of standard from the brand and the product – Fallkniven A1 Survival Knife - does not fall short of these expectations.
Somebody informed me that Fallkniven’s knives are designed in Sweden, but are manufactured in Japan, by whom and where is a proprietary trade secret. I cannot verify the rumor or conjecture that I have read online that someone surmised that Ichiro Hattori made Fallkniven products in Seki-City, Japan, which has long been revered as a the cutlery- and sword-making capitol of this country.
The design of the knife is unique and especially elegant. It is an 11,1/8 inches overall long knife with an impeccable VG -10 stainless steel blade. The blade has been modified to a spear point and has a satin finish. It is hands down one of the most beautiful looking tools. The product also has a trademark textured handle – black checkered Kraton. The handle has a visible tang to it and has a lanyard hole as part of the futuristic design of the overall product. The ergonomic grip of the knife makes it a super versatile tool; however, it is especially good for chopping. The full tang has been designed to go right through the product so you do not have to break grip to strike until the end.
The Fallkniven A1 is the best mid-size to large survival knife in my opinion. Living in the South East Asia, it's very wet & hot in most of the time. So even though I love my carbon steel knives, they just don't work for me with all the rain, salt, and humidity here. I own many knives, and I appreciate each one for its intended purpose. I though Fallkniven knives are made for military-use and I would not hesitate to take it to the field with me. I did a lot of batoning and played around making feather sticks and still razor sharp after...cut thru paper like butter. I just put this knife through a brutal work weekend on my hunting property. It performed beautifully. After cutting and chopping for 2 days there was no noticeable decrease in performance. After a few swipes through a Smith's sharpener I was shaving hair off my arm. I really can't say enough about this blade.
Swedish products have rather dominated the knife niche largely. I researched this knife extensively before purchasing because it’s not a cheap item. I also watched all the Youtube videos. The A1 Destruction Test video cinched it for me. Now that I've got one, and had a chance to test it, all I can say is that every positive review was right on the money.
I've been into blades for a long time and I've never held a finer knife in my hand. The laminated VG-10 steel is awesome. Shaving sharp out of the box and easy to maintain. Sharpening might take a little practice if you've never had a knife with a convex grind, but once you get the hang of it its easy. I can't say enough about the blade. This knife will cut, slice, slash and stab anything you could throw at it and ask for more. The knife itself is approximately the same size as my full size Kabar D2 Extreme Fighting Knife, with the blade slightly shorter but MUCH thicker and the knife heavier.
It has nearly a 1/4" thick blade which gives it awesome chopping and wood splitting abilities. You should feel very comfortable using this camping, fishing, in the back country, jungle, wherever.

The Kraton handle wraps around a full tang, and it's excellent for handling in gloves or mitts. Also retains a good grip when wet from
rain or blood for you hunters out there. One of the only complaints I've ever heard about this knife is that some people with large hands find the handle a little on the short side. I can see that, however, the handle fits my hand perfectly. The Kraton handle isn't pretty but it is functional and handles well with wet or gloved hands.
The Fallkniven A1 is no decoration. It's a real survival knife with the heft, size and quality any woodsman can depend on. I've had others, but after spending a few days chopping kindling in hardwood and a dozen other uses, the knife is still shaving sharp and shows no sign of damage. The case is just right. The size is just right. The handle is comfortable and works in wet and in dry conditions. You'll enjoy this knife for a lifetime. There is no better mid-size survival knife than the A1. It's expensive, but if you spend a lot of time in the woods, and have to depend on your knife, it'll be money VERY well spent.
For comparison, my Buck Special cannot hold an edge as well, is difficult to sharpen and it's a bit clumsy at close work, like notching and tinder making. The A1 is just superb at all these things. Had this for a while now, and I beat it up in the woods regularly. Don't see anything that compares. You can chop down a tree and still shave with the edge. Fits the hand, has just the right heft. This knife is now my prized possession.
I have created WHOLE shelters, split more wood in literally night and day weather conditions, repeativley I might add, created fuzz sticks, feather shavings, traps, I have had animal blood, water, sand, and dirt, You name it, and it has NEVER felt iffy in the hand.
As an survivalist I spend a lot of time in the woods when I have had free time among my business. In those days I was everywhere from the Mekong Delta River to Cambodia rain forests. I own knives from Kabar, ESEE, Ontario, Buck, Bark River, SOG, Cold Steel,Kershaw, Gerber, Blackhawk, Spyderco etc. I know it's a cliche, but in the case of theFallkniven A1 it's true, if I could only have one knife it would be this one. Get one, you won't regret spending the money, it’s a superb knife that'll last a lifetime.
One could always buy some cheaply-made Chinese- or Pakistani-made utility knives, but I would not take such inferior cutlery to the field where my life depended on them. As far as my review, it’s simply like this: It is an investment. You can buy $20 china made "knife" or save up and put the funds into a Real game changer. I am not writing a review about a product I haven’t tested myself. And most on here seem to talk about how great it looks.
I always try to buy the best if and when I can afford to. The best isn't necessarily always the most expensive. Take for instance the Ka Bar D2 which blew me away upon initial inspection. I thought to myself nothing can top this knife. Well this knife definitely does. This knife feels like it’s made of space age technology. The steel is like nothing I've seen or touched before knife wise. This thing is ridiculously sharp and feels like something that can and will last a lifetime. I definitely recommend the A1. THIS IS A TOP SHELF PRODUCT:
-Laminated VG10 steel will do well during fishing trips and camping in snow/rain due to more rust resistance vs. carbon steel
-1/4 inch back of blade helps split wood easily
-Blade will keep a great edge and not too hard to sharpen while out in the field/camping/fishing.
-Kraton handle feels quite comfortable. I have medium to large hands...and it fits great. Grip is nice. Laynard hole option is nice too.
-Sheath is great...knife stays in tight without having to clip it (upside down). Pulling knife out of sheath is easy with no effort.

The specs are at the top of this page. Reviews are everywhere you look. This knife has earned 10 out of 10 stars.
I wanted the ultimate fixed blade knife, the one knife I would want to have with me in a survival situation, and after much research decided on the A1. I made a very good decision. Not too small, not too big, but very hefty nonetheless. Beautiful steel, razor sharp. comfortable, understated handle. Full tang protrudes out of the handle. Elegant and functional. Of course I could have spent less on many other nice knifes but they just would not be as admirable as this one. A nice companion to my Cold Steel folder. Buy this knife. No way will you be disappointed.
Knife is so pretty, I almost don't want to use it. But that is like saying you have a Porche but don't want to drive it. This knife is worth the price for any avid hiker, hunter or knife collector. I strongly recommend for this Fallkniven A1 survival/fighting. This will last a lifetime. You can purchase this item here on Amazon. Enjoy it next week!
